Martin Valdez threw his second complete game shutout of the season. The junior lefthander threw nine innings against Bemidji State and shutout the Beaver offense while scattering six hits and striking out a season-high 11 batters. After the win, Valdez improved to 4-0 this season and dropped his ERA to 1.80.
Tyler Adams hit .542 for the week with 13 hits in 24 at bats. His hits included a double and two runs batted in; Adams also scored seven times as UIU went 2-4 on the week with two of the losses coming by one run and one coming by two runs.
The Peacocks went 2-4 this week after a pair of one-run losses to Augustana and a split with Bemidji State which included a two-run loss in extra innings. UIU lost both extra-inning games they played this week. Upper Iowa (12-15, 4-6 NSIC) hit .354 this week scoring 42 runs (7 per game), but the pitching staff, outside of Valdez and reliever Jordan Kearns (1.1 innings), allowed 42 runs to their opponents as well. John Dobson (.500), Sam Krick (.500), Will Loza (.467), Jimmy Pinakidis (.400), Mikey Henrichs (.360), Sam Kortes (.333) and Jose Aguirre (.316) all had a great week at the plate. Upper Iowa will host Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday in Fayette beginning at noon before a weekend series with Winona State in both Winona and Fayette.
