Trevor Franklin went 2-0 on the week with a 5-2 win over Jeremiah Peterson of Augustana on Friday and an 8-3 victory over top-ranked Andrew Pokorny of St. Cloud State. The win over Pokorny avenged an 8-5 loss to the Husky during the National Duals this past January. Franklin is now 11-4 overall.
Upper Iowa earned a 21-15 win at #15 Augustana on Friday night thanks in large part to a win by fall at 157 by Travis Eggers and a decision at 141 by Matt Paulus. The sixth-ranked Peacocks welcomed the top-ranked Huskies of St. Cloud on Sunday and nearly pulled off the big win thanks to a shift in the normal lineup. After Franklin’s win for UIU, the Huskies won three straight matches to take a 13-3 lead. A major decision by Wade Gobin (#4 NWCA) and a decision by Blake Sorensen gave the Peacocks hope for the rally. SCSU’s Shamus O’Grady earned a major decision to set the score at 17-10 with two matches remaining. Mitch Schultz (#5 NWCA) bumped up to 197 and scored a 10-0 major decision and Carl Broghammer (#1 NWCA, 197) took the heavyweight match against Jacob Kahnke (#2 NWCA). Dorman Gym erupted when Broghammer entered through the tunnel to face the nation’s second-best heavyweight. Each wrestler scored an escape in regulation, but neither could gain the takedown for victory. In the sudden death period, Broghammer got in on a single-leg shot, but Kahnke worked his position to create the two-point takedown and secure the victory for SCSU.
The Huskies pushed their win streak to 46 straight duals and set up a winner-take-all with the #10 Mavericks of Minnesota State for the NSIC crown next week.
Upper Iowa will spend the next two weeks training for the NCAA Super Regional on Sunday, Feb. 24, at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa.
