Carl Broghammer improved to 34-2 with a pair of bonus point victories; he now has earned extra team points in 27 of his 36 matches. Broghammer kept his 5 points earned per match average steady with a fall at SMSU and a win by major at (15-1) at MSUM; the redshirt junior led the race for the NCAA’s Most Dominant Wrestler Award last week and was tied for the most pins against Division II opponents as well. Broghammer extended his win streak to 19 straight matches with the victories.
Upper Iowa escaped Marshall, Minnesota with a 19-18 win thanks to a point on criteria (match points in favor of UIU, 35-31) that broke a tie after all ten matches. The Peacocks and Mustangs each won five matches including one pin, but UIU was able to edge their hosts in the end. UIU then faced off with the Dragons of MSU Moorhead on Saturday afternoon and won eight of the ten matches to claim a 28-6 win on the road. The pair of wins improved the team’s record to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC.
Chris Paulus (125), Jordan Rinken (149) and Blake Sorensen (174) all joined Broghammer at 2-0 over the weekend, while Trevor Franklin (133, #2 NWCA), Bryce Lumzy (157), Wade Gobin (165, #4 NWCA), Brock Gobin (184) and Jeremy Brazil (HWT) all picked up one win.
Upper Iowa will travel to Augustana College this Friday night, Feb. 8, and then return home to face St. Cloud State on Sunday, Feb. 10. The dual with St. Cloud State, which begins at 2 p.m., will also act as both Senior Day and Alumni Day for the Peacocks wrestling program.
