Wayne Sawyer graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1958 and was awarded his M.A. from Winona State, Winona, MN in 1969. While at UIU, he was the only basketball player in Iowa Conference history to earn All-Conference honors for four years. He played on two successive conference championship basketball teams in 1957 and 1958. Wayne finished his basketball career as the all-time scoring holder for an Iowa college player with 1,922 points in four years – that record stood at UIU until 1974. He is a member of the UIU 1,00-point club.
Sawyer also played on John “Doc” Dorman’s championship and unbeaten baseball club in 1956.
He has taught in several Iowa and Illinois schools and is now a teacher and coach at Waukon, IA.
