Walida (Hawkins) Hewitt is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame as an athlete.

A four-year starter for the Peacocks in women's basketball, she lettered for UIU from 1994-97 playing under coaches Linda Olson and Bill Wilson. Hewitt was a two-time All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Second Team selection in 1994 and 1996 and was the first junior in Upper Iowa women's basketball history to score 1,000 points. She is currently second in the program's records with 1,424 points and holds the top spots at UIU in career assists with 415 and career steals with 385.

The Flint, Michigan native was named as an All-City performer at Northern High School; earning the honor her junior and senior years as a guard in basketball and a catcher in softball.

A physical education major, Hewitt is currently teaching elementary physical education for Life School on the Cedar Hill Campus in Cedar Hills, Texas. She also works as an assistant volleyball coach and head high school girls track coach at Oak Cliff High School. The track team made three consecutive trips to the Texas State Tournament from 2002-04 placing 8th on the third trip.

She is married to Bernard Hewitt, a 1995 graduate of Upper Iowa and a two-year basketball starter for the Peacocks.
