Terry Stevens is a Fayette High School graduate and graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1959. In his football career at UIU, he received letters four years in a row in football and baseball and three letter in basketball. He was All-Iowa Conference and Little All-American Quarterback in 1957. He was second in the nation in total offense that year .
Stevens played professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals organization after graduation.

He then transitioned to coaching and spent thirteen years coaching in Oelwein and nine years at Sioux City East, Sioux City, IA. He has a record of 107 wins, 47 losses and 5 ties, including three undefeated seasons (1970 at Oelwein, 1972 and 1979 at Sioux City East).

Stevens has received numerous honors during his coaching career. He was named Coach of the Year for the IFCA N.E. District Class I in 1970, IFCA N.W. District Class I in 1972, Sioux City Journal Coach of the Year in 1974 and IFCA N.W. District Class I in 1979. He was also N.W. Coach of the Year in 1979.

Stevens was an Assistant Coach in Iowa’s first Shrine game in 1973 and he was the head coach in 1976.
