Roger Mangan, a native of Chicago, Ill., graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, political science and French and is being inducted as an athlete.
Mangan lettered in wrestling from 1959 to 1962. A two-time Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Champion at 147 pounds in 1959 and 1960, he compiled a career record of 33-2-2 in a limited schedule over his time with the Peacocks. Mangan was a major contributor to the Peacock squad that earned a share of the IIAC Championship in 1960. In 1960, Mangan was the only wrestler to pin their opponent (2:34) in the finals of the IIAC Championships. He gives major credit to Coach Bill Rettko for early guidance at Upper Iowa and to Coach Andre Nadeau for him remaining three years of competition.
Mangan started a 16-year teaching and coaching career with stops in Fredericksburg, Cresco, Bettendorf and Estherville. He eventually earned a Master's degree in Education and became an education consultant in social studies for the Mississippi Bend AEA.
Presently, Mangan is a very successful insurance agent for State Farm in Littleton, Colorado. He has been married to Alice DeLong Mangan, a 1961 graduate of UIU, for 52 years. The pair raised two daughters; Michelle, deceased, and Melissa. Mangan's pride in Upper Iowa is knowing first-hand the quality of people that graduated from UIU who were rock solid, caring and motivated in helping others.
