Roger Dooley, as a three-way player for the football team at Upper Iowa, led the Peacocks to Doc Dorman’s first Iowa Conference championship in 1925, a team characterized by Dorman as his best team at Upper Iowa up to that time. He was picked on the All-Iowa Conference Team at quarterback. In 1926, he was picked at fullback, and in 1927 at halfback. Dooley was the only player in Conference history to be picked on the legendary team in three different positions, and one of the few to be selected All-Conference three different times. He was the second-leading scorer in league play in 1925, and led the Conference in 1927. In addition to playing four years of football, he played basketball and baseball for four years, too. He was captain of the baseball team his senior year and he also competed on the track team in his freshman and sophomore years.
Dooley was the winner of twelve varsity letters in four years and was the winner of Athletic Prize in 1927. In addition, he was a member of the R.S.C. He competed in debates in his junior and senior years, winning the Fawcett Oratorical Contest his senior and the State Oratorical contest the same year. He was a member of Pi Kappa Delta, the University Chorus, the Y.M.C.A., and was business manager of “The Ship” his senior year.
Upon graduation in 1928, Dooley coached and taught in several Iowa and Minnesota high schools and was superintendent of the Winnebago, Minnesota schools from 1943-1948. In that year, he founded the Dooley School Equipment Company and maintained that company until 1962. He was also owner and operator of Midwest Scoreboard Factory Distributor Sale Company and was cited as the leading scoreboard salesman in the U.S.A. Dooley also authored basketball articles for the Athletic Journal.
He is now retired.
