Robert Allen received a B.A. degree from Upper Iowa in 1948.
Allen's teaching and coaching career has included the schools of Lamont, Garnavillo, Union-Whitten and Wapsie Valley, where he has been since 1959. In 1954 at Garnavillo, Allen's girls' basketball team won the state championship. His career record in girls' basketball is 558-185, and also includes two teams going to the state tournament at Wapsie Valley.
Two of Allen's former players, Sandy Fiete and Brenda Moeller, represented the United States in competition in Russia; and several have gained all-state status, as well as inductions into the Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union Hall of Fame.
Allen has an equally impressive record in coaching softball, with a 473-156 record. His teams at Wapsie Valley have been represented in state tournament competition nine times and were state champions in 1969 and 1970. They have placed third in the state five times.
In 1974 Allen was awarded the Golden Plaque of Distinction Award to a Superlative Iowa Coach by the Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union.
In 1976 he received the Alumni Achievement Award from UIU.
