Richard "Rick" Knipper received his bachelor’s of arts degree from Upper Iowa University in 1973. While at Upper Iowa, he was a four-year letter-winner and starting catcher for the baseball team. He was named an All-Iowa Conference First Team catcher in 1971, 1972 and in 1973. He was also named an N.A.I.A. First Team catcher from 1971 to 1973.
In 1972, Knipper received Honorable Mention All-American honors (3rd Team) and the same year he was elected to the American Association of College Baseball Coaches All-American team. A year later, he was named a captain of the team and the Most Valuable Player.
Knipper played in seven straight Iowa Amateur Baseball state finals. He and his wife, Janie (who also attended UIU), reside in Iowa City and the Cedar Rapids area. The Knippers have three children, Kyle, Michael and Kristen.
