Oren "Swede" Selgelid received his B.A. from Upper Iowa University in 1931. While at UIU, he lettered in basketball and baseball a total of six times. In his senior year, he was named the captain of the basketball team. Selgelid had the unique experience of playing both college basketball and baseball with “Abe” Lauritzen, his high school coach. Lauritzen coached on a two-year certificate, and then went back to UIU for his B.A. degree.
After graduation, Selgelid coached at Dike and Albert City high schools in Iowa. In 1939, he published an article in SCHOLASTIC COACH magazine entitled, “An Error Index as a Coaching Aid.” After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Selgelid went into investments and insurance. He was vice-president of American Security Life Insurance Company in Chicago from 1962 to 1968. Since 1968, he has owned and published a Shopper’s Guide in Rock Island, covering the Quad City area. He retired in 1978.
Selgelid is best known for organizing Doc’s Boys in 1974. They started with 22 members, and now have over 400 members. He published a book about this group in 1978 entitled “Doc Dorman’s Old Time Peacocks.” In 1977, he received the UIU Alumni Achievement Award, and in 1979, he began serving on the Upper Iowa Board of Trustees.
