Matt Cowley is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame as an athlete. A transfer to Upper Iowa, Cowley was a two-year letter winner in baseball from 1999-2000 playing under coaches Rick Heller and Mark Danker.
Cowley, who received his bachelor’s degree in management information systems, had an outstanding career for the Peacocks on the mound. He was named a first team All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pitcher in 1999 and repeated the honor in 2000. In 1999, he was also selected to the All-Central Region second team after being named UIU’s most valuable pitcher. The highlight of Cowley’s pitching career came in 1999 when he did not allow a single homerun during the season. He still holds the UIU team record for fewest walks per nine innings, 1.0, which he set in 2000. He ended his career with an overall record of 11-5 including a 7-2 mark in the IIAC. He completed his junior year with an ERA of 1.90 in the IIAC.
Cowley received his associate’s degree from Yuba Community College in Maryville, CA. A resident of Fayette since his UIU graduation, he has been employed at Upper Iowa since 2000 as an Enterprise System Specialist. Cowley was a member of the Fayette City Council for two terms and received the Upper Iowa Young Alumni Award in 2005.
Matt and his wife Billie, a 2003 Upper Iowa graduate, are the parents of three children; Justine, Jayla, and Maxwell.
