John Miller, class of 1968, is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Hall of Fame in the athlete category. A three-year letter winner for the Peacock basketball team, Miller served as a co-captain of the 1967-68 team. He averaged 16.9 points as a junior and followed that up by leading the Iowa Conference in scoring, averaging 24.3 points per game, as a senior. Prior to this, Miller was a valuable member of the 1966 and 1967 IIAC champion teams, helping the 1967 team reach the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City. In 1967, Miller was named to the Second Team All-Iowa Conference. He was named the First Team All-Conference center and selected to the NAIA District 15 First Team in 1968. This was followed by earning National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Honorable Mention All-American honors. He concluded his career as a member of the Upper Iowa 1000-point club, with 1,044 career points, and was named to play in the Iowa Senior All-Star Game.
Miller served two years in the United States Army. He had a very successful management-ownership business career, retiring in the fall of 1999.
A 1964 graduate of Regina High School in Iowa City, Miller earned a Business Administration degree at UIU. Coach Stan Jack recruited Miller to Upper Iowa. Jack commented, "without reservation, he was one of the most dedicated, loyal, hard-working student-athletes I had the privilege of coaching in my 31 years."
Miller and his wife Betty reside in Riverside, Iowa. They are the parents of Julie, Mike and Jennifer.
