Herbert Raney received his bachelor’s of arts degree from Upper Iowa University in 1936. At Upper Iowa, he participated in football, basketball and track, letting three times in football and four times in track. An injury prevented the fourth letter in football.
In football, Raney was an All-Conference center and All-State Honorable Mention on Coach “Doc” Dorman’s 1934 Championship team, which was one of the ten unbeaten and untied teams in the nation.
In track, he was named team captain in both his junior and senior years, and set a conference records in the discus in 1935 as a junior.
His leadership abilities were demonstrated on the athletic field and in campus life, as he held many class and organizational offices at UIU.
After graduation, Raney taught science and mathematics and coached basketball and baseball at Manly High School, and in 1938 he began a 27-year farming career. In 1965, he went back to teaching at the Twin Rivers School District in Bode, also coaching junior high basketball and track and assisting with football.
He remained with the Twin Rivers Schools until his retirement in 1976, and he still lives Bode, Iowa. He served as Secretary of the Delana Township School Board for seven years.
Raney is a member of the Masonry, Eastern Star and the Aged Group of Livermore, serving in many leadership capacities. He also has been a member of the Farm Bureau and the Bode Community Club for many years. He is also an active member of the Methodist Church.
