George "Bud" Richards received his B.S. from Upper Iowa University with a major in physical education and a minor in biology and social science in 1951. At UIU, he was a member of Coach “Doc” Dorman’s football team and lettered two times. Richards also lettered two times in basketball and all four years in track. In 1950, he led the league in football in scoring, served as the team’s place-kicker on extra-points, and he was an All-Conference halfback.
After graduation and until 1962, Richards coached at Farmersburg, Fayette, New Hampton, and Estherville High Schools. He led Fayette to win the football conference Title in 1955. He served one year as Athletic Director at Estherville Junior college and one year as head basketball, track and backfield football coach at Upper Iowa. In 1962, Richards went into business as an independent insurance agent in Fayette. From 1973-1975, while running his insurance business, Richards donated his time as head football coach at UIU. He also refereed with the Iowa Athletic Assocation between the years of 1955 and 1962.
