Dr. Horton is being inducted posthumously into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame as an Athlete. He earned 12 athletic letters from 1915 to 1919; four each in basketball and baseball, three in football, and one in track. "Vinc" as they called him was a key contributor to the UIU football, baseball, and basketball athletic programs. Upper Iowa was a member of the Hawkeye Conference and Horton was the most consistent ground gainer. "Vinc" was selected on the All-Conference team and also received All-State honors in 1917. In a football game versus the University of Dubuque, Horton intercepted a pass on the goal line and ran 100 yards for a touchdown as part of a 21-7 victory. He excelled in basketball as well for the Peacocks as newspapers detail a January 19th, 1917 conference basketball game as a 35-30 victory by Upper Iowa over the Iowa State Teacher's College.
A native of Lime Springs, Iowa and a graduate of Lime Springs High School, Horton left school and joined the U.S. Navy on active duty from May 1918 to February 1919. "Vinc" gave up his final season in football before returning in the spring to compete in the final half of the basketball season before completing his collegiate career in baseball. After graduating from Upper Iowa in 1919 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, he entered the University of Iowa and in 1923 was awarded his Doctorate in Medicine. Dr. Horton practiced medicine in Calmar, Iowa from 1925 until 1948. Dr. Horton died May 31, 1948 due to an embolism following surgery. Dr. Horton is survived by five children; Mary Lou, Helen, Anne, Vincent, and Robert.
