Upper Iowa University Athletics

Dave Broders, a 1974 graduate of Upper Iowa University, was an outstanding baseball player during his collegiate career. A four-year letter winner in baseball, Broders was the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1974 in addition to being named an All-Conference First Team member in 1973 and 1974 at second base.

He was named to the Worth All-American District Team in 1973 and 1974, the N.A.I.A. District 15 First Team in 1973 and 1974, N.A.I.A. District 4 All-Area First Team in 1974 and team captain and Upper Iowa’s Most Valuable Player for the 1974 season. Also in 1974, Broders set what was then a conference record with six home runs in a season.

As a junior, he hit .461 in the conference and .371 overall, while he owned a fielding percentage of .952. In his final season, he hit .365 in the conference and .389 overall with a perfect fielding percentage from the infield dirt.

Broders also lettered in football during his first two years at UIU.

Following graduation, he became a teacher and coach in the Bellevue Community School District. He is head baseball coach at Bellevue High School and has compiled a record of 294-184. Both of his 1981 and 1987 Bellevue teams were state runners-up.  Furthermore, his teams were district champions in 1981, 1987, 1989, and 1992. He was also named the District Coach of the Year in 1987, 1989 and in 1990.
