Dave Barclay, class of 1972, was inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame in the coaching category. During his time at UIU, Barclay was a four-year football letter winner as a quarterback, flanker and defensive back while also handling the Peacock place kicking duties.
Barclay earned a B.S. in Elementary Education and Physical Education. He started his teaching and coaching career in the Starmont School district initially as a fifth-grade science teacher. Coach Barclay joined the Peacock football program in 2005 after 33 years as a coach at Starmont High School, including the last 25 years as the head coach. He served as the Interim Head Football Coach for the final three games of the 2008 season and served as a physical education teacher.
At Starmont, Barclay compiled a 163-73 career record. He coached eight playoff teams, including the Iowa Class 2A state runners-up in 1999. Barclay was an assistant coach at the 1994 Iowa Shrine Game before serving as the head coach at the 2004 Shrine Game. Furthermore, Coach Barclay’s teams have been in six State of Iowa football playoffs and he has coached three undefeated teams, four conference championship teams and three district championship teams. Barclay has been named Tri-Rivers Conference Coach of the Year three times (1982, 1983 and 1986), the Registerland Coach of the Year in 1982 and the District 5 Football Coach of the Year in 1998. He was also a 2002 inductee into the Iowa Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Besides coaching football, Barclay has also been a junior high girls’ basketball coach for 14 years and a junior high wrestling coach for 12 years.
A 1968 graduate and outstanding athlete at Westboro High School in Westboro, Mass., Barclay lettered 12 times in three different sports (football, hockey and baseball). Barclay was recruited to come west to Upper Iowa by the late Eb Eischeid.
Dave and his wife, Barb (Symons) Barclay, a 1972 graduate of UIU, reside in Arlington, Iowa. They are the parents of two sons, Matt and Jim.
