Bob Klieman, class of 1961, was inducted into the Upper Iowa Athletic Hall of Fame in the officials category. He is a native of Waterloo, Iowa and graduated from St. Mary’s High School, where he was an outstanding athletes in all sports during his interscholastic career.
Klieman, competed on the gridiron and the diamond for the Peacocks during the Doc Dorman era, earning eight letters in football and baseball. He was a two-year starter at halfback in football and started for three years at third base and left field for the baseball team. As a team captain in 1961, the team placed second in conference play.
Following graduation from UIU with a bachelor of science degree in biology and physical education, he started a teaching and coaching career at Waterloo Columbus. He coached the football and gold squads and was the head football coach from 1967 to 1971 for the Columbus Sailors.
Klieman had an illustrious career as a basketball official and was inducted into the Iowa High School Officials Hall of Fame in 1987. He officiated for 16 years and was assigned to 13 Iowa High School Athletic Association Tournament games, 11 of which were the championship games – a record at that time. He also officiated collegiate basketball in the Iowa Conference for five seasons.
Outside of officiating, Klieman was a Sales Representative for Iowa Sports Supply for 12 years and in 1983, he established Roberts-Klieman Associates, Inc., a position he still holds today. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the MidWest Sports Goods Market and he has extended himself to community service in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area. He still serves on the Leisure Service Commission for the city of Waterloo.
Bob and his wife, Mary Kay, are the parents of a daughter, Sarah, and two sons, Scott and Chris.
