Bill Huckstadt, a member of the Upper Iowa Centennial Class of 1957, and a Monona High School graduate, played shortstop on the Monona High School teams that won two state championships and state runner-up honors. As a coach, he compiled a 27-year girls’ basketball coaching career record of 472-161 (winning pct., 75 percent) and a 13-year softball coaching career total of 406-122 (winning pct., 77 percent). He taught and coach at Launa Community School, Luana (1957-60), Maquoketa Valley High School, Delhi (1960-66) and Bennett Community School, Bennett (1966-1993). At Bennett, his softball coaching record includes three state tournament appearances, 12 conference championships, eight sectional titles and 1971 runner-up honors. He was noted by the press as the “first area softball coach to use the ‘9-3’ play, where the rightfielder throws a batter our at first base.”
Huckstadt’s basketball coaching career includes two state tournament qualifiers, 14 conference championships and 16 sectional titles. He retired in 1993 and lives in Bennett. He and his wife, Jolene, have three children, Bill, Kim and Lori.
